Boston is considered by many to be the home of the Revolution, making it also one of the founding cities of the country. So what better place to celebrate America’s birthday? Make this July 4th, and take a look at our guide to celebrating in the city.
The most famous Boston Independence Day event would have to be the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. This event is free and open to the public at the DCR Hatch Shell on the Esplanade. The concert actually lasts two days, with a kick-off event from 8-10pm on Wednesday, July 3rd. If you want to see the fireworks — which, trust us, you do — you’ll have to come back the next day. The concert again begins at 8pm, and lasts until the fireworks at 10:30pm. The whole show wraps up at 11pm. Be warned: the Esplanade fills up incredibly quickly, being one of the city’s most popular events of the year. Gates open at 5pm on the 3rd and 9am on the 4th, and we recommend getting there as early as possible.
So what can you expect from the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular? Well, a fireworks show of course! It’s one of the best in the country, as well as one of America’s oldest public July 4th celebrations, and also includes a traditional F 15 Eagle flyover, by the 104th Fighter Wing from Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield, Massachusetts, as well as a special flag presentation by the United States Air Force Honor Guard from Washington, D.C.
This year’s concert headliner is Grammy, Emmy, and Golden Globe award winner, and Academy Award nominee Queen Latifah, who will perform a selection of songs from her jazz, rap, R&B, and Broadway legendary catalogue. Arlo Guthrie who will also perform a musical tribute entitled Summer of ’69, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Woodstock.
